GE Caledonian recently welcomed 30 female S1 pupils from Loudoun, Queen Margaret and Greenwood Academies for a day packed with engineering activity allowing them to explore what goes on at the Prestwick site.
The girls were tasked to build a rocket from recyclable materials which were then powered with water and air to achieve flight outside with the winning team those who reached the greatest distance.
The young people were also given the opportunity to meet current staff in GE including a number of female apprentices and were taken on a tour of the shop floor. All were impressed with the size of plane engines up close and the high value of some of the tiny components.
The DYW team enjoyed the Lego production line challenge the most where teams competed to build the highest number of replica fan blades in a set time frame. As we realised this is not as easy as it sounds with each team member only being able to be based at their particular station, fan blades having to be built in a set order and any defects being sent back to the start. It was an enjoyable day for the next generation of GE engineers from start to finish.
