My name is Alec, an S4 Pupil at Auchenharvie Academy. I really enjoy working with computers in school and went to Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce to experience what it’s like to work in an office environment. During my time, I saw what it was like not only to work in an office, but also to see what else the DYW team does.
I went round all staff members and found out what their job role involved. I went out with Steven to observe a work experience H&S check for a pupil who had self-sourced their own placement. After returning to the office, I sat in on the Educational Team Meeting. This was a great way to see the impact DYW Ayrshire has on each of the secondary schools in South, North and East Ayrshire. I went to St Joseph’s Academy in Kilmarnock with Natalie, it was great to see the end result and how much hard work is put in to sourcing a business or organisation. I went to Kyle Academy in Ayr with Christina and this gave me the chance to see how different schools organise their careers events and fayres. I was also able to see first-hand the different types of businesses who engage with these events.
By the end of the week I had a great understanding of what the chamber does and what it is like to work within an office environment. By Friday I was very comfortable around the other staff as they were all very welcoming and nice. This week has helped me realise the opportunities I have ahead of me in the future. I highly recommend going on a work experience placement if you have the chance as it is an excellent opportunity.
